Zooey Deschanel says that she “always wanted to be normal” while growing up, until she finally discovered that her own unique appeal and eccentric nature actually had its advantages.
After years of trying to fit in, she finally accepted that there was no other way to be than true to self. Even when she tried to fit in, she admits that her quirky character still managed to seep through, and as a result, she was often seen as “offbeat” to others.
Eventually, the 31-year-old actress says that she has learned to use it to her advantage in the world of acting. It seems that playing different roles allowed her to come out of her comfort zone as she could experiment with various aspects within herself on the screen.
In a world where there is such a need to belong, it takes a certain amount of assertiveness to walk a different walk and stand out from the crowd. As a singer-songwriter and actress, Deschanel is no exception to being the exception.
According to a source she says, “It’s like ‘Well, that’s who I am’, and it comes through and it’s OK.”
She also adds that a huge part of embracing who she is meant not craving the approval of others. She explains that even when there is someone who doesn’t like something about her, this does not mean she has to change herself just to fit. Trying to please everyone is an unrealistic expectation. It is just easier to have faith in the true self and allow it to be expressed, regardless of other’s opinions.
Deschanel says:
I don’t crave the approval of someone who just doesn’t like me. If they don’t like me then that’s fine. But yeah, occasionally you’ll run across something where someone will say something mean about you and it’s hard because there are some things you can’t change about yourself. And, you know, you shouldn’t change them because other people like them. It seems like a lot of people love having an opinion, which is great, but I don’t always need to hear it.
Regardless of anyone’s opinion, Zooey continues to stand out and because of this, she gains the adoration of many of her fans simply by being who she is. In this way, she inspires many others to do the same.
