What isn’t Zooey good at?

The more I think about Zooey Deschanel, the more I wonder if there is anything she can’t do. It’s not enough that she is an extremely attractive person with a great personality, she’s also a tremendous actress who has entertained us all for years now in shows like New Girl and 500 Days of Summer. Just to name two of her best roles (okay so she’s great in all of them). Recently I was visiting a friend of mine in Germany though, and the subject happen to turn to Zooey.

We were watching her on the TV at the time, and he commented: “She would make a great poker player.” It struck me as quite a random thing to say. Sure, it’s not unusual for actors in Hollywood, or even the German film industry to play a little poker on the side. Hollywood is notorious for celebrity house poker tournaments in Beverley Hills and beyond, and it wouldn’t surprise me if she had somehow been invited, or at least given poker a go on websites like PartyPoker.com, whilst in Canada or any other country that allows online gambling.

Anyway I asked him what he meant, and he said: “All she would have to do is pull a sad face and I’d give her all my money.”

It’s a fair point. She does have one of them faces you’d struggle to say no to. Not just because she is extremely beautiful, but also because her big doe eyes could charm the shell off a tortoise. And being an actor she certainly has the qualities to be a successful opponent at the Texas Hold’em high stakes tables. She’d have to learn the ropes and get in some practise first, but you see one of the key factors which sets the winners apart from the losers is their ability to bluff. Actors can pretend to be frustrated by the hand they’ve been dealt, or even smug about it if they want to dupe their competition into believing they have a better or worse hand of cards.

Zooey could certainly rest assured that if she ever entered the casinos in Munich;, she’d certainly beat one person without even raising an eyebrow. My friend Dieter.

Zooey Deschanel has no intention of going on a diet in the new year.

The New Girl actress, 32, covers the February issue of Glamour magazine and says she doesn’t feel pressure to be a certain size in Hollywood, but does think many stars are too skinny.

“Actresses have definitely gotten thinner over the course of my lifetime . . . There are a lot of actresses who are unhealthy-skinny — much, much too skinny. You can’t Pilates to that,” she explains. “I’m a very small person, and if I lost 15 pounds, I’d look like them; it’s scary. For young girls, what does that say? You need to look this way to be successful? That’s not true. You do not need to look or be anorexic to be successful in Hollywood. The range of what’s acceptable is larger than what people believe.”

And Deschanel also doesn’t follow the Hollywood trend of moving from TV to movies — she prefers the opposite.

“I’m just going where the material is,” she says of being the star on the hit Fox show, New Girl. “Some of the smartest people run the network I’m on. People sometimes say, ‘Oh, you were a movie star,’ and I’m like, ‘No, I was a supporting actress.’ I wasn’t an A-list actress, and I’m fine with that.”

The (500) Days of Summer star finalized her divorce from Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard in December. The exes announced their separation in November 2011 after two years of marriage.

Deschanel tells magazine that her parents have been married for 40 years, and her grandparents were married for 69 years before her grandfather passed away.

“My dad is so sweet; he’s always like, ‘Your mom is a better cook than any restaurant.’ And I remember my grandfather looking at my grandmother, saying, ‘She’s the most beautiful woman in the world.’ You can’t get any better than that. But we live in a different time,” she explains. “I don’t get it when people just have the goal of meeting someone—then it’s only about the goal. I’ve never been a five-year planner.”

2012 hasn’t been just a big year for doomsday preppers and TMZ’s Lindsay Lohan beat reporter, it’s been a fine one for Fox’s New Girl, which further established itself as a force for good comedy. (In addition, Zooey Deschanel and Max Greenfield received Emmy nominations over the summer.) EW has named New Girl one of its Entertainers of the Year, along with Homeland, Ben Affleck, Seth MacFarlane, and others. Pick up a copy of the EOY issue — which includes a tribute to the second-year roommate comedy by Bones star/Zooey’s sister Emily Deschanel — and scroll down for a few bonus quotes from Zooey (Jess), Greenfield (Schmidt), and Jake Johnson (Nick).

On why New Girl works
DESCHANEL: The entertainment business gets into pandering a lot. There’s a lot of groups who study the public to see what they want. But the weird thing is, this was just all of us being like, “Well, we think this is funny,” so we’re putting out what we think is funny and not thinking about it in that way… People want to think that you can guess what people want and then give it to them, but we’re not guessing what people want. We’re just doing stuff we think is funny and putting it out there and hoping that other people think it’s funny too.

On the show becoming a true ensemble
JOHNSON: They launched it on Zooey, and she did an amazing job. And then they pushed Schmidt out to see if somebody else could break through. And he did, and then they said “Well, hell, let’s see if we can get everybody though.” [It’s like in] basketball, you can’t score if they don’t call your number. Now everybody is getting their number called. And everyone is hitting their shots.
GREENFIELD: I think why certain shows are not successful is because all of a sudden, like a basketball team, they get exposed early on and they realize, “Well, we can’t run this play because this one can’t run.” And it was a real blessing [for us to find out] as we’ve continued to go that when you have people who can play the big comedic foil of a scene in one episode and then the next episode play the straight man, you can very likely last for a very long time.
DESCHANEL: A couple people said to me, “I feel that all of a sudden it’s an ensemble and this was supposed to be your show.” And I’m like, “It was never supposed to be my show!” You can’t have a television show that can run for a long time based on one person. You don’t have Mary Tyler Moore without Rhoda. And we have all these amazing characters. What, everyone’s just supposed to be in the background all the time, and then one person is getting every joke? That’s impossible. That’s a myth that a show is all about one person. It’s called Seinfeld, but all those people made storylines work. I always knew this was an ensemble.”

On the romantic tension between Nick and Jess
DESCHANEL: From what I gather this is a very slow burn…They sometimes tell us not to hug because they’re so afraid. “You guys have too much chemistry! Don’t hug!” Jake and I started being like, “This is ridiculous!” They said, “Okay, fine, you can hug, but don’t hug too long.”… Schmidt & Cece (Hannah Simone) is obviously more on the surface, which makes Nick & Jess exciting but also sort of a nail biter, because it’s so under the surface. But I do think we’ll make some progress.
JOHNSON: For a long time, I wanted them to get together. Because I was watching Max and Hannah having all this fun where they’re together and not together. And our whole storyline would be like, “We looked at each other weird.” And we’re hearing a lot online, and on Twitter, and from our fans saying, “Give us more”… But as it’s progressed, I’ve realized that in fact the writers are smarter than I am. I’m happy with what they’re doing. If they abandoned the Nick-Jess story entirely, I would lose a lot of interest in playing the part. As of now I really love it, because our show can go to absolute crazy town. But while we’re in crazy town, there’s always a grounding reality: This character feels, deep down, something different for that girl. As an actor, that’s a nice thing to always have. If and when they decide to finally play that card, I’m very excited to go down that road.

On the Nick-Schmidt friendship
GREENFIELD: We had begged the writers, and we still do, to give us more stuff where we’re on the same page, and we’ve been pitching an episode they’ll never do: The two of us become detectives. Something happens with Jess at work and she’s suspicious of something and Nick and Schmidt are like, “Oh that’s too bad, maybe we’ll look into it.” And she’s like, “No, please, don’t look into it.” And we’re like, “No, no, no, we’re just going to take a look at what’s going on.” And the two of them make one dumb move after the next… But it’s been really nice, and they have no choice but to put Nick and Schmidt in more situations. Because ultimately you want to see why these guys are friends. They can’t always be fighting, so those moments where we get to have fun and laugh and be in a similar storyline where our goals are [similar], that’s the best. The two of us have a really good time together and we both are so very clear on who our characters are and how they play off of one another. We just beg for those situations.
JOHNSON: Winston (Lamorne Morris) and Nick have always had something there, because they have an old friendship. At first, the writers had Nick kind of hating Schmidt and thinking he was just a douchebag, so Schmidt would do something funny and Nick would be really annoyed. Now when Nick and Schmidt are together, they team up. And they’re genuine friends and they’re idiots. Those two guys together can get into a lot of f—ing trouble. It’s like two takes on the same dumb theme. I view Nick and Schmidt as The Odd Couple. When one of those characters is running wild and the other one is trying to put him in his place, you can’t run as far. But when they’re both gunning together, it’s really fun.

On the Schmidt-Cece relationship
GREENFIELD: I like that he’s in pursuit again. It’s fun. I’m competitive so I want to win, personally… There’s a small part of me that would like for them to get back together and seal it up and get married — not save it for the end of the series. Let’s get married real early, move next door or somehow stay in the loft in some weird arranged thing, and see Schmidt in a full-on marriage. There’s a well of comedy in that storyline.

Oh, say Zooey can you sing!

New Girl star Zooey Deschanel lent her vocal chops to perform a concert at Game 3 of the 2012 World Series between the San Francisco Giants and the Detroit Tigers, singing the national anthem.

The funny girl donned a nude dress with a red belt and bold red shoes, accessorizing patriotically and tastefully. Zooey showed no nerves, and why should she? This wasn’t her first big ball game as the actress also sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” at last year’s series.

But which team was Zooey rooting for?

More of a diplomat than a true fan, the star tweeted prior to the game: “I am rooting for BOTH teams!!! Go #Tigers! Go #Giants! Can’t wait for the game!”

X-Factor judge Demi Lovato is set to take a shot at the anthem next at tomorrow’s game.

Root root root!

Who’s that girl? Emmy-nominated actress Zooey Deschanel!

The 32-year-old star of Fox’s hit show New Girl received her first Primetime Emmy Award nomination Thursday for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

“I wanted to be an actress since I was 2-years-old,” Deschanel told Entertainment Weekly after learning about her nomination. “It’s always been my dream and ambition. This is the kind of moment you dream about. Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that I could have this incredible honor and recognition. It’s just so exciting.”

Deschanel’s New Girl costar Max Greenfield also received a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

“I have such a great job that’s just such an incredible gift, and I always want to be doing the work because I love the work and not for some other reason,” the actress added. “[But] it just means so much to have this nomination.”

And Deschanel shared her excitement on Twitter with fellow Outstanding Lead Actress nominee, Lena Dunham. The 26-year-old creator and star of the HBO series Girls was also nominated for Outstanding Writing and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series.

“So excited for the Emmys!” Deschanel tweeted about attending the awards. “Lena Dunham — what are our nails going to wear?!”

Dunham hasn’t responded to Deschanel just yet, but did tweet, “I have no jokes to make. This is an amazing morning.”

She also shared her reaction to being nominated with The New York Times, explaining, “I’m so agog. If my voice sounds weird, it’s because I was literally screaming, all around my house, onto my bed, down the hallway, outside my house, on the phone with everyone I know. I just was doing a big scream-fest.”

If it were up to Zooey Deschanel, Jess’ wardrobe on New Girl would consist strictly of turtlenecks and floor-length skirts. But for an episode earlier this year, she found herself slipping into skimpy lingerie to seduce on-screen boyfriend Justin Long. “I’m sort of sheepish about [being naked],” says Deschanel. If she was uncomfortable in the scene, you wouldn’t know it. That’s because Deschanel’s performance—which has thus far included zany voices, awkward dance moves, pitch perfect line delivery (“Jessica freakin P?!“) and lots of singing—is so seamless that it’s sometimes easy to forget she’s not playing herself. To top it all off, Deschanel has also managed to keep her character adorkable (how many times did you hear that word before Jess came on the scene?) without compromising her intelligence. Now, if that’s not worthy of a celebratory chicken dance/Emmy nom we just don’t know what is.

There’s a new girl coming to Broadway.

Cast by the country icon herself, Zooey Deschanel will play Loretta Lynn in an upcoming stage musical about the singer’s life, Coal Miner’s Daughter, producers for the Broadway-bound production have announced.

Lynn personally introduced Deschanel Thursday night on the stage of Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium during Opry Country Classics. The two then sang “Coal Miner’s Daughter.”

“It’s a long way from Butcher Holler to Broadway in New York City. I never imagined I’d see Coal Miner’s Daughter on a movie screen, and now I can’t believe it’s going to be on a stage for people to see,” Lynn, 77, said in a statement.

Though no opening date has been announced – it will not conflict with Deschanel’s commitments to her Fox series New Girl, according to the producers – “I’m going to be right there in the front row,” says Lynn. “And I know Zooey is going to be great – she sings and writes her own songs just like I do, and we even have the same color eyes!”

Deschanel, 32 (and a musician in her own right as both a solo artist and as one half of the band She & Him with M. Ward), said, “Loretta Lynn and her music have been inspirations for me for as long as I can remember. She is a true legend and to be chosen to play such an iconic woman is a dream come true.”

Lynn’s bestselling 1976 autobiography Coal Miner’s Daughter revealed in painful detail her impoverished childhood in Butcher Hollow, Ky. It also served as the basis of the 1980 box-office hit that won a Best Actress Oscar for its leading lady (who also was Lynn’s personal choice for the role), Sissy Spacek.
